Sew Me

I’ve been sewing, on and off, since I was fourteen.  Please don’t do the math!  Let’s just say I’ve been sewing for a long time.

And, like my running and swimming, the Project (Laura) Runway has taken off since moving to Trinidad.  This girl likes her fabrics bright and sassy, and you can’t get much brighter and sassier than fabrics here…

You didn't think it ACTUALLY took me this long to sew for Miss Young Money once we found out she was a she, did you?  No sirree.   I got to it the very same day we got the news. First, to break the baby-sewing ice (and because I still wasn't fully getting that a girl was ...

Outfit of the Week Award: A Dress (And Weather) Save

This dress ALMOST didn't happen, thanks to my impatience, the first trimester, and some unwieldy buttonholes...  But I'm so glad it did! I've put in both photos--the first is a bit blown-out so the second gives a better idea of the actual shades of the dress. What I'm Sporting:

Outfit of the Week Award: Presenting… Presentable Mondays

There is a new rule in the house.  It goes along the lines of "I will dress like a human being on Mondays."  (There's a corollary rule for Sundays, by the way, which is basically "dress like a human being even if not leaving the house under any circumstances, you queen of the lazies").  It's ...

On Wednesday night, I went out to dinner dressed in my first purposely-made maternity skirt.  I paired it with one of my favorite tops, a belt, nice shoes... you know, the usual.  And I felt like the bomb--like I looked like ME again. Never mind that I was wearing a skirt style I'd never even thought ...

The Problem With Getting Dressed These Days…

...  Is that there are too many things that I didn't really foresee in this whole ballooning process. And I admit it:  I had some starry ideals about making myself an army-load of fashionable, cute, comfy dresses for pregnancy, dresses that my superb engineering skills would render useable from the second I found out I'd be ...

When The Government Declares a State of Emergency…

... The housebound get sewing. Honestly, though, a "limited state of emergency" was declared last night in T and T.  It's been attributed to crime (and a spate of murders in recent days), but all of us down here know it's much more complicated--and disturbing--than that.  If you take to the Trini Tweeters and Tumblrs, you ...

Evil Dressmaking Plottings

Doesn't that sound so delightfully sinister?  Oh.  OK.  Guess it's just me, then. Anyway, the latest wave of sinister evil dressmaking plottings is not scary--it's nice and simple (I hope) and giving me very nice dreams about frolicking in the sun in these future dresses of mine. What is slightly perverse--as if--is that the copycatting tendencies live, ...
