Trini Tales

I’ve lived here in Trinidad for two years now.  I may be used to it, but it never stops being intense, exciting, exasperating, surprising, just plain crazy, and the most rewarding place I’ve ever lived in my entire little life–all at the same time.

So I can tell some Trini life tales–and I can show what I mean when I talk about Trinidad:

I like your blog! I’m currently living in Barbados and can really relate to what you mean about the excitement and exasperation- it’s a rollercoaster but still a great Caribbean adventure! You’re inspiring me to chronicle my life here….

Thank you so much! Go for it on the blog–it’s a great way to remember your time in Barbados (and it would make awesome reading!)

Trini Tales: How To Get A Re-Entry Visa Without Tears

Last Friday, we went and got our re-entry visas renewed. I can't believe I wrote that in the past tense.  As in, I went to get it done... and it got done. So, here are my tips for getting re-entry visas (or any such Ministry-related business) sorted: The night before Make sure you have all ...

Diwali: Bright Lights, Bright Dress

Diwali is really one of my favorite holidays.  It's odd to think that, until a few years ago, I had never celebrated it, but since then, I've been making up on lost time... Like in 2006, when I borrowed a friend's salwar kameez for the Indian Students Society Diwali do:

Lady Bacchanal Returns… And Returns… And Returns Once More

First of all, THANK  YOU so much for your kind words and congratulations about the baby!  You all made me smile from ear to ear (and I think Young Money did a cartwheel or two out of happiness, too). ___________ So you might remember that we were dog-sitting for our neighbor's psycho dog, Hope. ...

Trini Tales: A Lockdown Defiance Sunday

OK, OK.  Of course I didn't defy State of Emergency lockdown curfew laws and what have you.  I'm not crazy, I don't think a police holding cell is a particularly fun place to be on a Sunday night, and, the day I leave Trinidad, I certainly hope it won't be on a forced consular plane ...

Film For Your Friday Lockdown

OK, peeps, so I am in no way paid to promote this.  I just happen to be a pretty big fan of the Trinidad + Tobago Film Festival.  That's all. So, on this lovely First Lockdown Weekend, you can either: Bemoan the lack of decent television to keep your mind off the fact that you ...

When The Government Declares a State of Emergency…

... The housebound get sewing. Honestly, though, a "limited state of emergency" was declared last night in T and T.  It's been attributed to crime (and a spate of murders in recent days), but all of us down here know it's much more complicated--and disturbing--than that.  If you take to the Trini Tweeters and Tumblrs, you ...

Three Things That Irk Me About Carnival Band Websites

This morning, I sat down with my breakfast and my laptop for a pleasure I'd saved up all week.  I was going to check out all the band sites and check out the costumes in detail.  I could barely make my breakfast fast enough--that's how excited I was about this. And then I sat down to ...

Trini Tales: Three Years!!

Today marks three years since I unceremoniously landed in lovely T and T!  My, my, how things change... My front porch has gone from this: To this (thanks to some newly-developed and discovered house gardening skills--and addition of the Lovely S's plants when she left ...
